DANCING : AN EXCELLENT EXERCISE THAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH
All physical activities that involve movement and solicit leg muscles can contribute to improving a person’s cardiovascular fitness. The principle to keep in mind in order to reach this goal is to achieve a particular level of breathlessness and maintain that level for a given length of time. This type of exercise needs to be repeated at least three times each week.
In order for the heart, lungs and blood vessels (which carry oxygen) to reap the benefits of exercise, dancing should lead to a heart rate increase of approximately 140 bpm. The idea is to become moderately out of breath. This type of effort should be sustained for a minimum of twelve consecutive minutes. An interval can last longer if so desired, and of course the effects will be all the better, with twelve minutes being the minimum amount of time needed to obtain significant results.
Professional dancers easily meet these levels and generally display good (cardiovascular) endurance. For dancers with a somewhat slower pace, it is up to them to monitor their pulse during peak activity to determine whether they are exerting adequate efforts. All it takes is a moment to pause and check your heart rate, then compare it to the level mentioned above. Dancing also offers other benefits related to improving the flow of oxygen throughout our system. It offers overall relaxation, improves flexibility and balance, all while offering great entertainment. Dancing is therefore very well suited to be the basic activity when maintaining physical fitness.
